Striking and Fielding

Dan Jones, an experienced PE lead, helped develop this on-demand course, aiming to enhance teaching confidence. The hour-long course is divided into six units, delving into activities, lesson structures, subject terminology, scaffolding, stretching techniques, progression examples, and additional readings.

Exploring the significance of Striking and Fielding in developing fundamental movement skills, the course introduces the “Volcanoes” game as a practical tool. Emphasis is placed on warm-up activities, skills learning, and game applications, focusing on specific Striking and Fielding skills like bowling and retrieving the ball. Engaging lesson starters and interactive applications through games or challenges are highlighted.

The course provides essential vocabulary for actions such as catching, throwing, bowling, and batting. Tier two and tier three words are underscored for better understanding, supported by a downloadable comprehensive list of striking and fielding terminology.

Scaffold and Challenge, along with varying equipment, space, time, and tasks for enhanced challenge, are discussed in the course. Practical examples demonstrate the application of STEP to stretch pupils’ learning. The course also explores the progression of Striking and Fielding skills across different key stages in the National Curriculum, showcasing activities and skills development from reception to Year Six through practical footage.
