Playing for Success

The key principle of our BGC Playing for Success courses is to enable the process which empowers individuals to make life-determining decisions and act on them. These courses are framed around the game of table tennis. Different aspects of learning the skills in playing table tennis become components that become the ‘modules’ of the course, into which we not only get them playing some table tennis, but attach other significant life skills too. We have several common themes which will be supported through all the programme: personal interactions, engagement in communities, life skills, well being ( health and mental health) and empowerment. The barriers we know have to be faced for all marginalised groups are within social, educational, economic, political and psychological arenas. We know that in particular, discrimination and stereotyping as well as abuse can be socially sanctioned, causing an emotional and psychological impact which at the least feeds a pattern of insecurity and apathy and at its worst can have a paralysing or damaging effect, with also a risk of it perpetuating to younger generations. The Playing for Success course is designed to build skills and self esteem as well as fitness through the physical activity of table tennis through BTTC coaching. Reflection and guided discussion are key features of the course and these would be facilitated by experienced, trained teachers. We use our club values of Respect, Community, Solidarity and Competition and table tennis skills and activity as the scaffold for our courses.
