Swimming Pool Lifeguarding: Skills and Practices

The Unit allows learners to gain the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively manage a range of swimming pool situations and first aid emergencies.

Learners who would benefit from undertaking this unit are those who already have a good swimming ability and are keen to learn about supervising swimming pools and demonstrate the necessary skills required to perform this effectively. Learners who successfully complete this unit are eligible to register with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as a swimming pool lifeguard and qualify for employment in this role. A learner in possession of this unit will be recognised as meeting the CIMSPA occupational standards for 2 years from its completion at which point evidence of requalification or valid CPD records will be required in order to keep their pool lifeguard qualification valid.

Learners should be at least 16 years old at the point of assessment and meet the pre-course requirements highlighted in the Recommended Entry to the Unit section below This age restriction meets the industry requirements of course registration set out by the key industry training providers (Royal Life Saving Society RLSS and the Swimming Teachers Association (STA).

Learners may wish to progress onto other industry awards such as Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work and Swimming Teaching Awards
