The main aim of the training course is to provide an opportunity for qualified personal trainers or clinical exercise practitioners to complete a course of study leading to an award based on the applied study of cancer-specific exercise. During the course candidates will develop the intellectual and practical skills to enable them to design and deliver specialist programmes of exercise for those undergoing treatment for or recovering from a range of common cancers. The course also aims to empower candidates to apply their abilities within the wider community, motivating and encouraging those affected by cancer to engage in exercise as both a preventative and rehabilitative intervention and supporting them towards recovery and long term cancer survivorship. To this end candidates study appropriate discipline-based subjects that underpin the successful development and delivery of cancer specific exercise pathways (such as clinical aspects of cancer, diagnosis, associated clinical treatment pathways and side effects, cancer patient psychology, behaviour change and motivational patterns), as well as the application of these principles to participation in cancer-specific exercise.
Candidates will develop their understanding of how to use the best and most current research evidence, alongside their practical expertise (as a fitness professional) and the values or preferences of their client, to guide the delivery of cancer-specific exercise
The 4 day programme duration and rigorous assessment strategy including practical assessments and written case studies reflect the need to demonstrate excellence in the specialist and interrelated disciplines detailed above.
By the end of this course you will be able to;
1. Understand the causes of cancer(s) and the integrated strategies for prevention, recovery and survival
2. Understand and critically evaluate the scientific research that underpins the benefits of exercise and physical activity in cancer recovery and survivorship
3. Understand the importance of motivation to achieving successful patient outcomes
4. Assess an individual’s physical and psychological needs and prescribe a suitable and safe course of exercise specific to their cancer type
5. Design and deliver a suitable and safe programme of exercise for cancer patients both in group exercise and personal training settings
