Youth athletic development within professional sport is well
established, with sport organisations implementing evidence-based strength and
conditioning practice across their academy athletes. However, such practice isn’t common
across all youth populations, with many young people missing out on the wide variety of
physical and psychosocial benefits gained from youth physical development due to a lack
of opportunity. The reason for such missed opportunity is multifaceted, including previous
misunderstood fears around youth training, a lack of knowledge around youth athletic
programming and periodisation and a need for further education within this specific area.
Therefore, the aim of this planned webinar is to introduce coaches to evidence-based youth
athletic development and how such training can be applied in coaching practice. The
webinar will introduce the Long-Term Athletic Development model, the Youth Physical
Development model, physical literacy, biological vs chronicle age and programming and
periodisation for youth populations, providing overall clarity on how to train youth athletes.
